Aardenburg

The oldest city in Zeeland

In 174 AD, the Romans built the Castellum Romanum, a fortified military encampment, in Aardenburg [Aereburg], making Aardenburg in West Zeelandic Flanders the oldest town in Zeeland. As a garrison town, the village attracted many traders and farmers at the time. The Sint-Baafskerk is the oldest building in Aardenburg. The oldest part of the church features building materials that likely originate from the Roman Castellum! The Archaeological Museum brings Roman times and the Middle Ages to life.

We look forward to seeing you in Aardenburg!💛
